Five unions sued the Trump administration on Wednesday, seeking to block what they called the possible mass firing of hundreds of thousands of federal employees who resist pressure to accept buyouts.

Fired federal employees from one government department were provided a helpline to appeal their terminations, only for it to connect to an apartment building, according to The Washington Post. The Small Business Administration provided the number for a paralegal after a round of probationary employee terminations instigated by President Donald Trump.

The White House and OPM declined to say Friday how many probationary workers, who generally have less than a year on the job, have so far been dismissed. According to government data maintained by OPM,

President Donald Trump has moved to dramatically shrink the size of the federal workforce and mass terminations have already begun at several U.S. government agencies. But a tangled web of laws and regulations around hiring and firing government employees could mire Trump's efforts in lawsuits and delays.

Liz Goggin, a social worker with the Veterans Health Administration, took the offer to resign in exchange for pay and benefits through September. Then she learned her position was exempt.

After a federal judge allowed the Trump administration's deferred resignation program to move forward, roughly 75,000 federal employees accepted the offer.
