An arrest has reportedly been made after a United States Postal Service mailbox was believed to have been set on fire, damaging a number of mailed-in ballots.

Numerous mail-in ballots were damaged after a United States Postal Service mailbox was set on fire in Phoenix, Arizona, on Thursday (October 24). Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and tried to recover the mail that was inside the collection box.

Authorities reportedly apprehended an individual suspected of setting fire to the box that had 20 mail-in votes, two weeks before Election Day in the swing state.

Phoenix police reported that the suspect said the arson was not politically motivated and that he just wanted to be arrested, according to multiple outlets.

The city fire department’s Arson Investigation Taskforce took into custody a man by the name of Dieter Klofkorn, who admitted to lighting a piece of paper on fire before putting it into a mailbox owned by the United States Postal Service, according to the Phoenix Police Department. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said the fire damaged multiple ballots.
