Ogg ran for district attorney as a Democrat during the 2014 election but lost that race to Republican Devon Anderson. She ran again in 2016, beating Anderson and starting the first of her two terms.

Harris County taxpayers have so far reimbursed $1.5 million worth of legal fees for local officials who were investigated by former District Attorney Kim Ogg but never charged with crimes.
