A South Texas school district is warning parents that U.S. Border Patrol agents may be checking the immigration status of students as they participate in extracurricular activities. On Wednesday, the Alice Independent School District sent out a letter alerting parents that agents may be boarding school buses to question students about their citizenship status.

President Donald Trump has pledged mass deportations and launched a crackdown on illegal immigration shortly after taking office. His administration rolled back Biden-era guidance that limited federal immigration arrests near sensitive locations, including schools, hospitals and churches.

A letter sent to Alice ISD parents Wednesday, which was later removed from the district’s website, said students may be detained and possibly deported if they can’t prove they’re in the country
