The world premiere of 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' starring Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna receives a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival.

Kiss of the Spider Woman has a rich and varied history, from Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel to the 1985 Oscar-winning drama by Héctor Babenco to the 1992 stage show on which this latest film is based. This makes viewing it in isolation nearly impossible, but even on its own terms, the 2025 musical movie by Bill Condon is a difficult sell.

Jennifer Lopez teared up at the Sundance premiere of "Kiss of the Spider Woman," explaining she has been "waiting for this moment my whole life."

The plot in the new film follows the original in that it is centered on a political prisoner (played by Diego Luna) in Argentina who shares a cell with a queer window dresser (Tonatiuh), where they talk about the plot of a Hollywood musical starring a talented actress (Lopez).

Wrapped in a sparkling black dress bejeweled with faux spider webs, Jennifer Lopez teared up before a crowd of more than 2,000 people after the premiere of “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” “I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life,” she said, addressing her lifelong desire to star in a musical like the ones she grew up watching with her mother.
