The NYPD said a 32-year-old man holding a kitchen knife was shot inside the stairwell of a Bronx apartment building by officers responding to a 911 call for an attempted robbery.

An investigation is underway after a man who called 911 to report a stolen air conditioner was shot by police in the Bronx on Sunday.

Police in the Bronx shot a man who called 911 for help on Sunday evening after they mistook him for a knife-wielding assailant charging at them, authorities said.  According to police officials, the peculiar incident unfolded when a 32-year-old man residing at 335 East 148th St.
