More than an inch of rain fell in many areas, loosening Los Angeles hillsides burned bare by the recent blaze near the Pacific Palisades neighborhood.

The wet weather will bring relief to Southern California after a prolonged period of dryness, but there’s concern that any bursts of heavy rainfall could cause flooding.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch effective from 4 p.m. Sunday to 4 p.m. Monday for areas in or near burn scars created by the Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Hughes Fire and Bridge Fire, the latter blaze of which burned 56,000 acres last fall.

Southern California received some much-needed rainfall over the last two days, which helped with the ongoing wildfire fight across the Los Angeles area. However, the return of the rain triggered Flash Flood Warnings,

A flash-flood watch went into effect at 10 a.m. Sunday that includes fire-scarred areas of Souther California, with forecasters boosting their predictions for rainfall that carry the risk of significant flash flooding and debris.

There is a 10% to 20% chance of flash flooding and landslides in some recently burned areas of Los Angeles County, forecasters say, including the Palisades and Eaton fire areas.

Extreme conditions helped fuel the fast-moving fires that destroyed thousands of homes. Scientists are working to figure out how climate change played a role in the disaster.
