An unusual winter storm swept through the Deep South on Tuesday, bringing significant and even once-in-a-lifetime snowfall to unexpected areas.

Atlanta residents woke up to sunny skies, icy roads, single-digit wind chills and a second day of widespread school and office closings on Wednesday after a winter storm blanketed the city in snow for the second time in two weeks.

ATLANTA - Police in Atlanta are investigating a deadly shooting at a southeast Atlanta apartment complex on Wednesday. Officers arrived around 5:32 p.m. at the Villages of South River apartments located at 925 Conley Road SE. According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers found a male who was not responsive or breathing.

The Georgia State Patrol tells Channel 2 Action News that it still responding to crashes from the icy conditions Tuesday’s snowfall left behind. Channel 2 investigative reporter Mark Winne rode along with Sgt. First Class Jeremy Hilley on Wednesday and he told Winne that abandoned cars on or near roadways have been numerous.

ATLANTA — The snow and icy conditions left behind by Tuesday’s snowfall can be seen from space. “The clouds cleared out on Wednesday but left a visible imprint of the snow we got across the deep South,” Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

The winter storm brought up to about 2 inches of snow over parts of north Georgia and areas south of Interstate 20. “There was a sharp cut off in accumulating snow basically right along and near I-85 with not much, as expected, over areas north and west of Atlanta,” Meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

ATLANTA — Travelers are being warned to stay off the roads following snowfall around Atlanta on Tuesday. The continuing cold snap iced over any roads that haven't been cleared. A Georgia Department of Transportation notice said due to the inclement weather, "motorists need to stay off the roads."

ATLANTA — A southern storm system brought a quick shot of snowfall to parts of north and central Georgia Tuesday. This was a different storm than our January 10th storm. This one brought lower snow totals, but more treacherous road conditions due to the colder conditions in the middle of Atlanta's deep freeze.
