Aug 29, 2022 · There were plenty of famous outlaws of the Old West, but here in Utah, one name reigns supreme — Butch Cassidy. After all, it’s not often that a Latter-day Saint pioneer decides to become one of the world’s most famous train robbers.

In Utah's history there are folk heroes growing to almost epic proportion. Butch Cassidy, or, as he was christened, Robert LeRoy Parker, is the best known of Utah's outlaws, rivaling the fame of even Jesse James and Billy the Kid. Cassidy and his gang, the Wild Bunch, were among the most successful of all western outlaws.

This lawless bunch was often aided by locals who provided food, supplies, and horses—along with plenty of misinformation to local law enforcement.

For over 30 years this inhospitable terrain served as a hideout for outlaws of every description. Robbers’ Roost was a stronghold of the Wild Bunch, Butch Cassidy’s motley band of bank robbers, train stickup men, and horse and cattle rustlers.

On April 21st, 1897, the Pleasant Valley Coal Company located in Castle Gate, Utah, was robbed in broad daylight. Considered to be one of the most audacious hold-ups that occurred in the Western frontier, the Castle Gate crime was committed by the notorious outlaw Butch Cassidy.

The Cassidy Trail in Red Canyon isn’t just another pretty hike — it’s a chance to walk a path that is steeped in history. The trail is the same one the notorious Utah-born Butch Cassidy used to evade the law, and it would become part of what was known as the "Outlaw Trail."
