Hyde Park is an inner-city residential area of north-west Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, situated between the University of Leeds and Headingley. It sits in the Headingley and Hyde Park ward of Leeds City Council. The area is in the centre of the city's student community, being next to Headingley, another large student community.

Just minutes from the city centre, Hyde Park is a fantastic hub of culture, history and entertainment which makes it a very popular area for the student community. It sits conveniently between the University of Leeds and Headingley.

Hyde Park originated as the hamlet of Wrangthorn (perhaps meaning ‘crooked hedge’), on the edge of Woodhouse Moor, where the lane from Leeds entered Headingley township (later, ward). The name survives in the local Parish of Woodhouse & Wrangthorn, and in local streets.

Woodhouse Moor or ‘Hyde Park’ as it is commonly referred to, was the city’s first ever urban park. Originally coined by the Victorians as “the lungs of Leeds”, it was heralded as a pocket of clean air in contrast to the smoky industrial south of the city.

Woodhouse Moor is north-west of Leeds city centre and is bounded by Woodhouse, the University of Leeds, Burley, Hyde Park, and Headingley. As of 2005 the park had just under 3 million visits a year and is the second most popular urban park in Leeds. [2]

12.2.1 Hyde Park is characterised by diverse, compact and irregular development. At its heart is Hyde Park Corner, which acts as a gateway to Headingley from the city centre, and whose landmark is the tall spire of St. Augustine’s Church (1871).
