For comparison the Orion nebula measures 24 light years in diameter whilst the tarantula nebula measures around 550. The tarantula nebula is also seen to be about double the relative brightness of the Orion nebula despite being over 10 times the distance away from us.

Jun 17, 2024 · The Tarantula Nebula has an apparent magnitude of 8. Considering its distance of about 49 kpc (160,000 light-years), this is an extremely luminous non-stellar object. Its luminosity is so great that if it were as close to Earth as the Orion Nebula, the Tarantula Nebula would cast visible shadows.

This is of the tarantula nebula, a massive nebula in another galaxy, the large magellanic cloud, that emits strongly in Ha (red) and OIII(blue/green). May 7, 2022 · The Tarantula Nebula is massive, with the spider fang area being around 500 light years in diameter and with the surround nebula it hits a whopping 1,000 light years in diameter. This makes it the largest region of ionized gas in our local galaxy group which includes Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies.
